Carbon cycling in the Southern Ocean (SO) is tough but important to the global change research. This study used underway pCO2 observation in a large scale in the SO, and developed the characteristic of distribution of pCO2 in the surface sea water in the SO, and particularly paid much attention to the Prydz Bay region, analyzing the main driving forces to the pCO2 in the SO. The differences between the seasonal ice zone (SIZ) and none ice zone (NIZ) were revealed by this study. SIZ has higher primary production during austral summer because of some special reasons such as ice melting, by which there is much fresh water overlaying the surface, causing the special vertical stability in the whole water column and its benefit of plankton growth. Thus the biological factors dominated the feature of pCO2 distributions at that time. In NIZ, however, such biological effects are not shown significantly at all. It's in general, though, the hydrological process would still be dominating in local regions. The carbon flux in the SO was also be calculated and analyzed,contrasting with those in the Arctic region and the world ocean. It's significant to the evaluation of the carbon flux in the SO.

南大洋碳循环是全球变化研究的重点和难点,本项目研究通过对南大洋大尺度范围的走航观测,结合已有的数据基础,研究南大洋表层海水CO2分压(pCO2)的时空分布特征;并重点通过对普里兹湾的观测研究,分析控制南大洋pCO2的主要调控因子。研究还发现南大洋海冰区与非海冰区碳循环特征的重大差异,在夏季高生产力季节,海冰区由于融冰淡水分层带来的水体垂直稳定性的影响等原因,有利于浮游植物生长,生产力大大提高,逐渐发展成生物因子控制表层海水的pCO2特征。而在非海冰区,还是主要由温度等物理泵作用所控制。尽管总体上是这样,在局部海区,强烈的水文物理过程仍然是的主控因子。研究还对南大洋碳通量进行了计算分析,并对南北极海区及全球平均进行了有意义的分析对比,为准确评估南大洋碳通量做出了积极的贡献。
